What are the 2030 Global Goals, and why has Worthing Community Chest adopted them?

Worthing Community Chest is a local charity, and we work with the local community. However, we recognise that we are part of a bigger picture and research indicates that many of the grants we have funded to date address both local needs and some 2030 Global Goals targets.  With that in mind, we did some more exploring and discovered how they align with many of our values and the values of our groups.  Therefore, we have recently implemented the 2030 Global Goals into everything that Worthing Community Chest does.

What are the Global Goals?

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals aka UN SDGs aka Global Goals, are comprised of 17 goals that the world’s population and organisations are striving to achieve by 2030. 

We call them the 2030 Global Goals because it sounds more friendly and accessible. The 2030 Global Goals shares ambition across all countries, in a sense we are one united community striving for success.

The 17 Global Goals are succinctly presented in the colour table below and provide exciting opportunities for our groups and for Worthing Community Chest. We love the wonderful colours which also represent our values of diversity and creating harmonious communities. 

Embedded in each of the 17 Global Goals are 169 related targets. To date, many of our groups have run events which align to Global Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. See below for some examples of other global goals.

How do the 2030 Global Goals affect grant applications?

We hope the goals will inspire groups and amazing people to think of even more exciting new ideas. Our grant application form is currently being revised to include a question to encourage applicants to think carefully about how their activity or event can help address a Global Goal as well as the Worthing community. The good news is that it’s really easy.
Here are some examples: 

GLOBAL GOALS EXAMPLE 1:

Superstar Arts was successful and received £1500 in July 2022. This application, without them even knowing it, addressed two of the Global Goals as follows: 

Superstar Arts is a charity focused on creating new and exciting opportunities for people with learning disabilities to improve their facilities could improve their screen printing facilities by purchasing a new larger sink and wetroom style flooring.

GLOBAL GOALS EXAMPLE 2

Worthing Food Foundation 

Worthing Food Foundation was awarded a Growth for Grant of £1500 in October 2020. This group supplies tinned, dried, and fresh food to those in need and originated out of the local aid groups during the Covid-19 pandemic. The Group and its activities address two of the global goals as follows: 

Some of the goals cross over, for instance No Poverty and Zero Hunger. No Poverty includes targets for building resilience, whereas Zero Hunger is more relevant in this case.
