We joined Men in Sheds Worthing for the Grand Opening of their new workshop on 23rd June.
The event was the culmination of many months of hard work moving their operations from Northbrook College to the Lodge at Durrington Cemetery.
The move has been a huge team effort, and had significant financial and operational impacts on the group. We were able to help with funding to purchase a key piece of machinery which enables them to make use of reclaimed and donated timber – including recycled decking from Worthing Pier and unwanted church pews. Outgoing group chair Robin tells us that the new equipment is much quieter and safer and has been a “game changer” for the group and their projects.
Preparations for the move included building a new wooden outbuilding for “messy” work, and stripping out and refitting areas in the main building for wood turning, assembly and finishing. They’ve also built a wood store, repaired fencing and hedging, created composting and planted areas and new wildlife habitats and more!
The friendly and inclusive group is a registered charity and is perfect for anyone who likes to work with their hands; making and renovating in wood, learning, and sharing skills in a social setting. To finance the running of the group they sell things they’ve made, and they also provide practical support for a range of other voluntary organisations and projects locally.
Worthing Men in Sheds really epitomises WCC’s aims for our funding; to provide small grants that “unlock” the ability of community groups to support themselves and provide benefits to the Worthing community.
